Getting You Where You Need to Be

At For Care, we believe that getting where you need to go should never be a barrier to living life on your terms. Whether it’s heading to work, attending appointments, studying, or catching up with friends, transport is essential for independence and staying connected.

But we know that for many people with disability, public transport isn’t always safe or practical. That’s where NDIS transport funding – sometimes called the travel allowance – can make a real difference.

What is NDIS Transport Funding?

If you can’t use public transport independently because of your disability, the NDIS may include transport funding in your plan. This support is designed to help with the extra travel costs that come with having a disability.

It doesn’t cover everyday expenses like fuel or family trips, but it can give you the financial support you need to travel safely and reliably.

How Does It Work?

Transport funding is usually paid directly to participants in regular instalments. The level of funding depends on your needs and activities – for example, whether you’re studying, working, or focusing on community access.

In some cases, if your goals include employment or education, you may be eligible for additional support to help you get there.

What Can Transport Funding Be Used For?

Your NDIS transport support can be flexible, depending on your situation. It may cover things like:

  • Support worker transport: a support worker driving you to appointments, programs, or social activities.
  • Community transport services: such as local buses or provider-organised transport.
  • Vehicle modifications: if you own a car and need adjustments like ramps, hoists, or seating supports.

Remember: while the NDIS can fund modifications, it doesn’t cover running costs such as fuel, registration, or insurance.

Other Helpful Options

Alongside the NDIS, Queensland offers a Taxi Subsidy Scheme that may complement your funding. This can help stretch your budget further and give you more travel choices.

Making the Most of Your Plan

To ensure you get the right transport supports:

  • Talk openly with your NDIS planner about your travel needs.
  • Ask how Capacity Building funds might be used for travel training or independence.
  • Keep good records if your funding is reviewed.
  • Reach out to your Support Coordinator if your needs change.
How For Care Can Help
